The general contractor (GC) holds the prime contract with the owner and is responsible for delivering the whole project — scheduling, coordinating, and paying the subcontractors who self-perform or execute each trade. The GC carries the schedule, the budget, and much of the risk.
Most construction project management careers are on the GC side: it's where the coordination happens across every trade, and where roles like project engineer, project manager, and superintendent live.
